Information Flows in Causal Networks

SFI WORKING PAPER: 2006-05-014 SFI Working Papers contain accounts of scientific work of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the views of the Santa Fe Institute. We accept papers intended for publication in peer-reviewed journals or proceedings volumes, but not papers that have already appeared in print. Except for papers by our external faculty, papers must be based on work done at ...

Information Flows in Causal

We introduce a notion of causal independence based on virtual intervention, which is a fundamental concept of the theory of causal networks. Causal independence allows for deening a measure for the strength of a causal eeect. We call this information ow and compare it with known information ow measures such as the transfer entropy.

Segmental duration control by time delay neural networks with asymmetric causal and retro-causal information flows

The generation of pleasant prosody parameters is very important for speech synthesis A Prosody generation unit can be seen as a dynamical system In this paper sophisticated time delay recurrent neural network NN topologies are presented which can be used for the modeling of dynamical systems Within the prosody prediction task left and right context information is known to in uence the predictio...

Information and material flows in complex networks

In this special issue, an overview of the Thematic Institute (TI) on Information and Material Flows in Complex Systems is given. The TI was carried out within EXYSTENCE, the first EU Network of Excellence in the area of complex systems. Its motivation, research approach and subjects are presented here. Among the various methods used are many-particle and statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics,...

A Utilitarian Approach to Modeling Information Flows in Social Networks

We propose a multi-agent based utilitarian approach to model and understand information flows in social networks that lead to Pareto optimal informational exchanges. We model the individual expected utility function of the agents to reflect the net value of information received. We show how this model, adapted from a theorem by Karl Borch dealing with an actuarial Risk Exchange concept in the I...
